About The Over Tones: What to Expect
Typically, members commit to a season of 5-6 months, where we often have several small gigs (optional) and a large showcase concert at the end of the season (mandatory). Each season has a distinct theme, so we are always learning new and exciting music. We also usually have an optional holiday gigging season in December.
Due to COVID-19, our Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 seasons will be combined. We will be accepting new members throughout Fall 2021 and preparing for a smaller concert in November, while starting our main season in January 2022 for our major showcase concert in June 2022. We ask that all new members accepted into the group are able to commit until June 2022. If that feels like too much of a commitment for now, you are welcome to audition later in the fall for just the Spring 2022 season. Auditions will be open until December 2021.
We rehearse every Thursday evening from 7-10pm, usually in the valley, and rehearsals are mandatory. Most of our pieces are small group songs, so members may occasionally get a night off depending on the rehearsal schedule. When shows are approaching, extra rehearsals may be mandated as necessary. Members are allowed a small number of excused absences per season. We are a fast-paced group and rehearsals move quickly, with members learning most of their music at home and coming to rehearsals prepared to work on blend, dynamics, and musicality. Although sight reading skills are not required, members are encouraged to know how to read music. We do provide learning tools to increase ease of learning music.
We are definitely an aca-family and hang out way too much like doing social stuff together. Although hanging out with us outside of rehearsals is not mandatory, we host several social events to help members get to know each other. We also have an optional weekend retreat each season, usually in Big Bear, where we rent a private cabin and eat a lot. We’re hoping to bring this back soon, pending COVID-19 guidelines.
Lastly: there are no member dues! We’re completely free to join.
